Refinement by counter-currant-column technology

The advantages of using a counter-currant-column

Not only dry natural materials but also liquid essences can be processed by means of CO2- column technology and further refined. The liquid extract flows hereby in the counter-flow to the compressed CO2. Depending on the choice of parameters, the flow behaviour and contact period can be adapted to suit the assignment. Using this technology it is not only possible to concentrate required substances such as valuable aromas, but also to separate undesirable substances such as unwanted colouring agents. As with CO2 extraction, this is a process in a closed circuit and therefore there is minor loss of valuable ingredients or CO2.

Operating mode

In this process the liquid essence is injected out of a tank into the top of the counter-currant- column. The liquid or supercritical CO2 flows through the column from the bottom. Substances which are soluble in the CO2 under the defined conditions are taken out of the extract and leave the column with this from the top again. The column is directly connected to the separation vessels. After pressure release the substances precipitate there and can be taken out of the process. The CO2 is re-introduced into the cycle again. Ingredients which are inferior or insoluble under the defined conditions are taken out of the column at the bottom. Additional diverse fittings or filling material in the column influence the flow behaviour and contact periods.
